On a Budget
Great stays for less in Ethiopian Airlines destinations worldwide.
Part of a burgeoning brand of hostels across Europe, the Generator Paris stands out amid the capital’s luxe properties as a stylish offering for those with less to spend. Opened in February 2015, the hostel offers hip, modern accommodations — think less austere bunk rooms and more crisp quarters with funky accents, travel-size bars of sea-kelp soap, and a rooftop bar with views of Sacre Coeur. Prices range from roughly US$26 for a shared room with bunk beds and storage lockers to $123 (and up) for a room with two single beds and a private terrace. The Generator’s other locations include: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Copenhagen, Dublin, Hamburg, London, Rome, Stockholm and Venice.
The Hoxton Holborn
The second iteration of this trendy-yet-fair-priced hotel in
London, the Hoxton’s Holborn location offers 174 bedrooms that fall into four different categories: “Shoebox” (the smallest) on up to “Roomy” (the biggest), with “Snug” and “Cosy” in between. The industrial-chic accommodations include everything from free Wi-Fi and a complimentary hour of phone calls to a daily breakfast bag dropped at your door, including a fresh granola pot, orange juice and a banana. Add in a Brooklyn-style grill, a rotisserie-chicken cafe and even a basement nail salon, and the Hoxton makes for one delightful stay — with rates starting at roughly $100. The Hoxton also boasts a second London location, as well as a hotel in Amsterdam.
J Plus Hotel by Yoo
Originally designed by the celebrated Philippe Starck, J Plus Hotel by Yoo represents Hong Kong’s first boutique hotel — a hip urban retreat with fun, eclectic taste and tons of pampering amenities. Each of the hotel’s 56 rooms features Starck’s signature white walls and furnishings, all paired with bright pops of color to create an airy yet vibrant feel. Rates begin at roughly $150 for a double room, including everything from a daily Continental breakfast and afternoon tea to evening wines and laundry service. The YOO brand of hotels plans to open two new properties this year, in Rio de Janeiro and Boracay, the Philippines.
The hotel options in Times Square tend to be like most things in the tourist-filled plaza — fairly generic, and more than a bit overpriced. But citizenM, the first U.S. branch of a European hotel chain, aims to buck that trend, offering fresh, inviting accommodations with an affordable price tag. The art-filled hotel boasts 230 compact double rooms, all of which feature wall-to-wall windows, free Wi-Fi and a flat-screen TV (with complimentary movies!). Public areas — including lobby and rooftop lounges, a 20th-floor gym with floor-to-ceiling windows, and a 24-hour cafeteria — create a welcoming vibe plus lots of chances to mix and mingle. Prices start at $159. citizemM’s other locations include: Amsterdam, Glasgow, London, Paris and Rotterdam.
